Curriculum vitae

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Clausen, born 1964 in Düsseldorf, studied computer sciences at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) and graduated at TU Dortmund University.

After having worked as scientific employee, he became head of the Traffic Logistics department at Fraunhofer IML. Subsequently, he worked for Deutsche Post AG as project manager for logistics and later on as managing director of the subsidiary IPP Paketbeförderung GmbH in Austria. In July 1999, he joined Amazon.de in Bad Hersfeld and, finally, he became European Operations Director at Amazon.com before he returned to Fraunhofer IML on February, 1, 2001 as one of the directors of the institute and at the same time started his work as the director of the Institute of Transport Logistics. From July 2002 until July 2005 he was dean of the faculty of mechanical engineering at TU Dortmund University and from July 2005 until August 2008 he was vice dean of the very same faculty.

Today, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Clausen is director of the Institute of Transport Logistics at TU Dortmund University and director of Fraunhofer-Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML.


Positions and memberships

  • Member of the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure, GPL Logistiksysteme und –management, VDI e.V. since 2002.

  • Advisory Council Member of the Association of German Transportation companies (VDV), since 2002.

  • Chairman of the “Fraunhofer Traffic and Transportation Alliance” in the Fraunhofer Association for the Advancement of Applied Research (registered association), since 2003.

  • Member of the Board for Transportation and Logistics of the Dortmund Chamber of Industry and Commerce, since 2006.

  • Member of the European Transport Research Review Editorial Board, since July 2008.

  • Member of the scientific advisory board of the Bundesvereinigung Logistik (BVL) e.V. since 2010.

  • Member of the advisory board of Promotion Centre for Intermodal Transport (SGKV) e.V. since 2011.

  • Representative of Fraunhofer within ECTRI European Conference of Transport Research Institutes since 2005 (Member of the board from 2013 to 2016).

  • Member of the board of the logistics competence center Prien (LKZ), since 2012.

  • Member of the advisory board of the european transport journal "Internationales Verkehrswesen", since 2012.

  • Member of the round table for rail freight at Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), since 2016.

  • Member of the advisory board of Fraunhofer cluster of excellence “Circular Plastics Economy”, since 2018.

  • Prof. Clausen was Leading lecturer of diploma study course Logistics Management at University of St. Gallen from 2008 – 2018.

  • He was member of the advisory board of House of Logistics & Mobility (HOLM) GmbH, from 2011 – 2016

  • From June 2007 to June 2010 Prof. Clausen was „Visiting Professor“ at Sun Yat-Sen-University, Kanton (Guangzhou, China).

  • From July 2002 till July 2005, Prof. Clausen was dean of the engineering faculty at the University of Dortmund. Since July 13th 2005 till August 31st 2008, Prof. Clausen was vice dean of the engineering faculty.  From 2011 till 2013 Prof. Clausen was member of the finance senate committee.

  • He was Member of the DFG (German Research Foundation) experts board “System technology” on the subject “Traffic and transportation systems, logistics, quality management”, from 2004 - 2012.
